Tradition meets modernity
Today, the birthplace of the legendary operetta tenor Richard Tauber is a third-generation family-run hotel in a class of its own. Tauber made a name for himself in the 1920s as a legendary interpreter of Mozart operas. The tenor parts in the operettas of his friend Franz Lehár were written for him. From 1922 on, Tauber was regularly engaged at the Salzburg Festival and was part of the ensemble of the first opera performance as Don Ottavio. His version of “Dein ist mein ganzes Herz” from Lehár’s operetta “Das Land des Lächelns” made Tauber a world star virtually overnight.
“Our hotel is the birthplace of the legendary operetta tenor “Richard Tauber”, who saw the light of day here in 1891.
The history and hospitality of our house go back to the 15th century, even then the house in Herrenstraße was an inn.”

An eye on history
Under the watchful eye of the Nell family, who have been running the hotel since 1977, it has evolved from a classic hotel into a meeting place. The motto “tradition meets modernity” is our top priority. Despite constant modernizations and expansions, characterized by innovations and creative ideas of the entire Bären team, care is always taken to preserve and perpetuate the hotel’s tradition-bound history.
Three exceptional gastronomic establishments welcome not only the residents of the 54 rooms of the Hotel Schwarzer Bär. On the ground floor, the new gourmet bistro “DERschwarzeBÄR” invites guests to linger in comfort, while on the seventh floor, the modern bar ROOFTOP 7 with grill offers top-quality dishes and spirits with a 360-degree view over Linz. The Bärenstub’n is still available on request.
In addition to the owners Michael Nell and Lisa Sigl, chef Dieter Gütlbauer and ROOFTOP 7 bar manager Daniel Ehrengruber and their teams are responsible for the great success of the house.
We are looking forward to meeting you!
