Our hotel in the center of Linz is the birthplace of the legendary operetta tenor Richard Tauber, who saw the light of day here in 1891. The history and hospitality of our house goes back to the 15th century, even then the house in Herrenstraße was an inn.
Since 1977 the Hotel Schwarzer Bär is now managed by the Nell family. The house in a top location of Linz was last remodeled in 2017, so that it meets the architectural demands of the present. A new entrance area was created on Herrenstrasse with a modern day bar and new reception.
Today, the 4-star Hotel Schwarzer Bär Linz presents itself as a modern, contemporary house with charm, cordiality and the attention of a family-run hotel.

No spark of hectic hotel bustle and a design that makes you pause. And yet the lobby is not just a place to arrive. The modern bar and cozy lounge areas invite you to return. At the reception you will find a variety of possibilities for your vacation: get information here about excursion destinations, chat with the boss of the house, who can usually be found here, or stroll along the pedestrian zone in the Herrenstraße.

Under the watchful eye of the Nell family, who have been running the hotel since 1977, the establishment has developed from a classic hotel into a place of encounter. The motto “tradition meets modernity” is our top priority. Despite constant modernizations and expansions, characterized by innovations and creative ideas of the entire Bären team, care is always taken to preserve and perpetuate the hotel’s tradition-bound history.
Rooms & Suites
Hotel Schwarzer Bär has a total of 54 rooms spread over six floors. Per category, the hotel has six Classic double rooms, 14 Classic single rooms, six Business single rooms, 18 Business double rooms, three Business XL rooms, one Junior Suite and one Bear Suite. In addition, there are also five apartments for longer stays in the courtyard.
After redesigning in 2008, all rooms are modern and comfortably furnished, also equipped with balconies on the courtyard side. Amenities in our rooms include flat screens with HD TV, safes and some have kitchenettes. A special atmosphere in which our guests can relax and feel comfortable. Rooms on the fourth through sixth floors have “finecools” – heating and cooling through the ceiling. High-speed WiFi is available free of charge in all rooms and public areas.
A house with tradition
On the second floor of the house there are rooms with retro chic charm. They still bear witness to the previous generation and allow a brief trip back in time. Of course, all modern standards are still included.
Arrival and departure
The reserved rooms in our 4-star hotel in Linz will be available on the day of arrival from 3:00 pm. Room release on the day of departure until 12:00.
